record2.gif (3425 bytes) The 4 Knights (A vocal group drawn together in Charlotte, NC, originally known as The Southland Jubilee Singers in the early 1940's) did a demo version of "Cry" in 1950 as a "pop" version for Mitch Miller to "pop-ularize" it. Fortunately, Mitch thought Johnnie could do the job best. Click the record to hear a sample of the only demo by The 4 Knights that exists, it is an acetate, so noise is evident..
record2.gif (3425 bytes) "Prom" Records was a small independent label that recorded their own studio musicians and contracted talent doing cover versions of the hits of the day, mainly the top 5 each month, then packaged them with the hits "back to back" (sides A & B) to sell a few cents cheaper than the majors. The budget conscious public got two of the current hits on a single for less than the price of a one-sided hit (or 4 hits on the e.p.'s), but not by the original artist. "Little White Cloud That Cried" was re-made on Prom by Loren Becker & the Four Dukes with Enoch Light & his orchestra, click to hear a sample.
