JOHNNIE RAY REMEMBRANCE EVENT 2000

This was the first of many events to be held to celebrate Johnnie’s fantastic accomplishments, bring his name into the limelight and give fans the opportunity to share their memories of a fantastic performer. The highlight of the event was the full-length performance by the late Kalin Twins who flew in from The U.S.

Guys in Tux's

The Kalin Twins, who had a big hit on Decca Records with "When" in the late 1950's (It has sold over 3 million world-wide) and got their start in show business impersonating Johnnie Ray in the early '50's, and were called "one of the best acts in the business" by Ed Sullivan, performed at the event for charity (pictured above, left to right: The late Herb Kalin, Johnnie Ray's Road Manager Tad Mann, JohnnieRay.com Webmaster/U.S.A. Fan Club President Ric Patterson, and the late Hal Kalin at Ye White Hart Pub in Barnes, London). Later in life Johnnie saw the Kalin act and is quoted as saying he felt it was "a beautiful tribute". Several recording artists have credited The Kalins with influencing their careers, The Rolling Stones and The Beatles among them. The Kalin Twins continued through the years to see Johnnie occasionally on the road where they kept their friendship alive.

We had a gRAYte time!

The Kalin Twins each did their own impersonation of Johnnie Ray in a performance that will never be forgotten, Herb Kalin performed a song he wrote for the event as a "Message from Johnnie to his fans" (scroll down for lyrics below) as well as a performance by The Kalin Twins of their own hit "When" (above). Merv Griffin once said "There is no mistaking that great Kalin sound". Read more about The Kalin Twins by clicking here.

I Haven't Gone Away
A Message from Johnnie to his fans
Words & Music by Herb Kalin

I Haven't Gone Away, I'm with you Every Day
In everything You Do, I am Here with You,
I Haven't Gone Away
I am that Hush before a Summer's Rain,
And When the Robin Sings his Sweet Refrain
I Sing Again

I am There in every Ray of Sunlight
Every Cloud Along the Way
I am that Star, Shining Through the Moonlight
Forever and a Day

You Don't Have to Weep, I am not Asleep
I Live Within Your Heart, Never Shall we Part,
You Don't Have to Weep
You Can find me in The Morning Sun
And in the Evening When the Day is Done
We are as one

I am There in every Ray of Sunlight
Every Cloud Along the Way
I am that Star, Shining Through the Moonlight
Forever and a Day.

JOHNNIE RAY

NEWS

"JOHNNIE RAY DAY" WAS SEPTEMBER 21, 2002, IN DALLAS!

The Statesman Journal of Salem, Oregon reported:

On Sept. 21, 2002, Dallas will honor it's favorite son with Johnnie Ray Day, a half-century after the first Ray Day in Dallas, Oregon. The city has never forgotten Ray, but it hasn't tried to capitalize on his legacy, either.  Randy Ray of Salem, Johnnie's 57-year old nephew, said that when people find out he is related to the singer, they still enjoy talking about Johnnie. "If there hadn't been a Johnnie Ray, there never would have been an Elvis, or The Beatles," Randy ray said. "It's a story that's been overlooked."

Arlie Holt, 72, of the Polk County Historical Museum, is hoping the event will help expand the museum's exhibit on Ray's early years. Those who grew up with him are invited to share their memories of the singer. Some will be taped for a video history.

The Polk County Historic Society will host Johnnie Ray Day at the Polk County Museum on the Polk County Fairgrounds near Rickreall Fairgrounds on Sept. 21. The event will feature two showings of a British-produced documentary {The Southbank Show} on the life of Johnnie Ray at 10:30am and 2pm.

The historical society will produce a video titled "Johnnie Ray, The Dallas Years," as part of the museum's permanent archive. For more information, call Arlie Holt, 503-623-2871.

LOOK FOR JOHNNIE ON THE NEW "VH-1 CLASSICS" CHANNEL ON SATELLITE

Music Video Channel VH-1's spin-off channel called "VH-1 Classics" plays all-'80's videos 24 hours a day, including "Come On Eileen" by Dexy's Midnight Runners. This is the video that shows Johnnie Ray arriving in Australia for the first time along with fans holding pictures of Johnnie and wearing shirts and shoes that have "JOHNNIE RAY" printed on them. The opening verse of the song is: "Poor Ol' Johnnie Ray sang a sad song upon the radio as he broke a million hearts in mono..."

The channel is available on most satellite packages and some cable services around the world. The video with Johnnie in it is in regular rotation, I have seen it three times in the past two days.
